Buried at the Crossroads

£12.99

This book uncovers that one woman’s story and reveals the stories of many others in Cornwall who were shunned in death by the church and their communities, or who chose, for their own reasons, to be buried apart. It explores the superstitions behind and the traditions of crossroads burials and our ancestors’ obsessions with death and dying.

This is the first book to investigate these events in any detail and it may change how you look at the Cornish countryside forever.”

Description

In the summer of 1813 a young woman was buried on the isolated moors of Penwith, at a place where the boundaries of four parishes meet.

She was just one of an unknown number of outcast dead who for hundreds of years were denied a proper resting place in consecrated ground, and were instead buried without service or ceremony at a crossroads or beside a highway.
